Why are there virtually no mesmers ingame?
I made a new mesma last week and its about half way through factions already. Now I realise that low-end areas are empty anyway, because everyones either in GWEN or elite zones these days, but ive noticed something I hadnt before.
In a week of paying a mesma, I have see only one other mesma aside from myself! Just one!
I've seen plenty of warriors, elementals, monks, Rangers, Ritualists, Dervs and even loads of Assassins! But only one other mesma.
If you check the price on mesma runes, they are all at base price of 100g. A sure sign that no one is buying mesma runes. What is unapealing about being a mesma?
I've not had issues getting into teams and I personally feel i've been quite effective with my newbie build and limited skills. So why so few/none at all?

Some classes seem to be played far more than others anyway, it's the same with most games such as wow that feels more like world full of hunters sometimes.

E-Denial doesn't appear to affect monsters. And by the time you "shutdown" a mob, your team would have already steamrolled over it. The skills Mesmers can throw at a single target isn't as useful as say, blowing the shit out of them with Meteor Shower. I still take a Mesmer Hero, but I would be cautious to take a Human Mesmer, just because AI reaction time is so much better than Humans.

Because it's really not as much fun playing a class that can't do massive damage in PvE. A lot of people who made mesmers either neglect them or delete them.

I've still got a Mesmer. She was my first character. I love her to bits, but they're really only fun to play in areas where you actually have time for you skills to have some effect.

Me spells are usually really good, against 1 person, there is no real rapid damage on multiple targets. pve isn't challenging enough to need a Me. considering bosses shead hexes so fast, Me's arent even that good when trying to take down a tough boss like rotscale.

Agreed.
Its just what people like to play.
The players character differs from its own personality.
Most people wants to see big ammounts of damage popping on the screen.
Its not everyone that likes the idea of "neutralizing" the opponent or using backfire, shatter hex or degen (specially the degen, because it doesnt show any concrete number).
Get used to the idea of allways beeing The Mesmer on your group, at least you know you are unique =]
And no, mesmer inst a pvp class, this comment was obviously retarded and should be ignored (sry if i offended).

QFT! LOL
seriously though, its hard to be a good mesmer, people prefer to c-space everything.
If you wanna see some mesmers try RA, lots of them there.

No.
It's absolutely fun playing a non-damage class in PvE.
It's just that the mesmer skills have such insane effects that demand that the poor soul that they are used on LIVES long enough to suffer.
And that doesn't happen in PvE.
Everything just dies way to fast to actually feel the satisfaction that shutdown brings. And then all one is stuck with are the long recharges and that occasional interrupted or diverted skill.
Thus one is unable to play the mesmer at it's strongest.
On-topic - I keep running into mesmers.
Although I probably keep running into warriors too - I just don't notice them.
That might be the issue at hand.

Probably because they find it harder to get into groups, plenty of people are too short sighted to realise how valuable they can be.

Well, my first character was a mesmer and I've stuck with him for over 2 years now. He's brill (I've got 9 other characters in PvE 1 for each of the other professions) when GW:EN came out I decided to make my mesmer my main character and focus on him for getting monuments.
Not getting into groups can be frustrating but my guild helps out and so long as Ursan remains unnerfed it's given me a chance to explore DoA and such.
The best thing about being a mesmer is that when you do spot another mesmer it's normally quite easy to strike up a conversation, and they usually turn out to be lovely people.
